I just read a blog from Tmobile..
T-Mobile Blog

So with over a million people having an unlocked I phone - can someone tell me how the process works?

Do I buy the phone and have someone unlock it?

Are there other recommendations besides the one above?

Thanks!

I read about the following local tech business Milliamp on this forum some time ago. They specialize in Apple iphone, ipod, and ipad repairs. I have used them before a couple of times, and had no problems. They are very professional. They may be able to help you. Stop by or give them a call. Unless you're a techie person, you'll need someone to do it for you. You need to make sure it's someone reputable obviously.

Jailbreaking
is the unlocking equivalent on the Iphone system. Rooting is the unlocking equivalent on the Android system.

I rooted (unlocked) my HTC EVO 4g phone myself. It's extremely simple. I just went to a trusted website...downloaded a program and less than 5 minutes later my phone was unlocked and ready for me to flash it to Cricket Wireless.

You don't want to do that. The 3G basebands are not the same for ATT and TMob. It will work, but you'll be stuck on edge data (SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW), and you'll never get 3G.

There's many people around who can do this for you as evidenced on this thread. My daughter had Tmobile and had a friend who unlocked an Iphone (3G) for her. She later got a 4G Iphone and gave me the 3G.

Of course we're wondering about how it's going to be now that ATT bought Tmobile or at least I think I heard they did.

Perhaps but there is more information needed, where to purchase the phone locally. I sent an email to the first recommendation and they responded today that they no longer unlock.

Response to email - Thank you for your inquiry about the Iphone unlocks. At this time due to our relationship with AT&T, and the unstable nature of the unlock, we no longer do the unlocks on the Iphones.

So I continue to look and seek information about the local purchase and the local unlock. Apple appears to sell new unlocked at the price of approximately 600.00 plus.
