My husband goes to Spec's in Houston once a month to stock up on wine. They have an incredible selection. I'm so excited they're coming to San Antonio!

Spec's is well known to Houstonians, the most respected liquor store in town, and it's all over town. The downtown store which several have referred to is an experience all by itself. Picture wines, liquors, cheeses, deli trays, crackers, etc. from all over the world and samples of many available on the weekends, yes wine and liquor too.

You could spend a lot of time in a Specs, it's definitely not your average liquor store.

Good store. They closed one in houston because of permits. To close to a school and they went ahead and built it out.

aj007: Yeah, on Washington Rd. Interesting that they did get a permit from the city. Was just now revoked because of 1000 ft rule. The Harris County Attorney's Office filed a lawsuit against Spec's in March. Spec's filed a countersuit. Lots of $$$ got lost.
bluff...: Gabriels isn't Spec's.... not even close
Anyone knows the opening date? Hopefully before X-Mas...lol

Well, I thought Gabriel's was owned by Spec's because there is a store in San Marcos called Spec's-Gabriel's outlet store...

aj007: yes, I read about that on Swamplot.com and chron.com
Let me know if you need direct link
The city mistakenly issued a license to the store despite it being too close to a school.
Spec's tried to take advantage of the error and keep the store open, and succeeded for a few months. (http://www.khou.com/news/local/stories/khou090911_mp_specs-store-closing.16ea530ac.html (broken link))
About $400,000 later, and on the hook for a lease totaling $2.4 million more, on Friday it decided to abide by the city ordinance and close the store The law is the law, says the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and since a formal variance was not given by the city, Spec’s is violating it.
The new countersuit claims that by granting the store permits, the city had agreed to allow the Spec’s at the Washington and Westcott roundabout to sell alcohol — even though the property was less than 1000 ft. from Memorial Elementary School. According to a city ordinance, only establishments earning more than half their revenue from food sales are allowed to sell alcohol within 1000 ft. of a school.
