The bus rumbles by my house at 6:50 am. Every time I hear it, I am thankful we homeschool. If we had to make it to school by 7:30, my kids would have to be in bed no later than 7:00 and would only get to see their dad 30 minutes a day. Now, they go to bed at 8:30-9:00 and sleep until 8:00-8:30 in the morning.

Tired kids are grouchy, non-attentive and just plain difficult. I wonder why school starts so stinkin' early here.

I've already been at work for about an hour by 6:50.. is 11 hours of sleep healthy? I remember staying out most of the day when I was a kid and that's the way it should be. Worn out kids aren't cranky, on drugs, tagging, or anything else like that.

Some San Antonio districts make the elementary kids start early and the high school kids start late based on research that proved adolescents get too little sleep to do well in school if they have to start the day early. This way, the high school kids get an extra 45 minutes to an hour of sleep that they wouldn't get otherwise.

I am much more of a believer in that system now that I have adolescents in the house than I was when my kids were in elementary school.

My kid gets on the bus at 6:35am. I like it because I can beat the traffic and get to work early.

I just hope my dd keeps the habit into her adult years. I hate it when people drag into work after 8:00.

Not only healthy, but completely necessary. There are many people that believe that some kids with ADHD are just chronically over tired.

Here is a chart Baby and Children Sleep Chart

I agree, older kids need their sleep too. Why can't all the schools start after 8? Why are they staggered?

I think it's crazy to start so early as well.

my guess is it makes it easier on the parents to drop the kids off/get them on the bus before they go to work.

I've never been a morning person and dreaded my kid starting kinder this year. School starts at quarter to 8, we're up at 6:30. And I honestly love it. By 10 a.m., I feel like I've accomplished so much. Kids are in bed between 7 and 8 p.m. which is another major plus because I can actually watch some of my old tv shows again!! Desperate Housewives...how I've missed you so!

Hopefully most 6 or 7 year olds aren't tagging or on drugs regardless of how tired they are
