I'm moving from Houston to SA and I want to know if I can rent a decent house for under $1400 a month. Also, for you that have been to Houston.. where are the comparable areas in San Antonio to Houston Heights and Montrose. I'd like to live near a lot of restaurants and bars. Thanks!

Southtown, King William, Tobin Hills, Mahncke Park. Almost all those areas are like Montrose or Houston Heights. the rent on a house can be under $1400, depending on the house. You won;t get a palace, but it can be done. An apartment for sure under $1400 in any of those areas.

Tobin Hill is much like the Heights in its early years of gentrification. St. Mary's Street is one of the major commercial corridors running through Tobin Hill; it's a very walkable stretch that includes everything from a lounge-y coffeehouse, acoustic performance space, Mexico City-style dance club, punk/metal/goth venue, neighborhood pub, a 60-year old historic burger joint and much more - plus a few blocks away is the Pearl Brewery complex brimming with higher end retail, restaurants and a farmers market.

You can generally rent a house in Tobin Hill for anything from $1000/mo to $2500/mo depending on size/condition of the house and location within Tobin Hill. To give you one example, my 2B/2Ba 2300sf not-totally-renovated house near Woodlawn & McCullough (far enough away from St. Mary's to avoid spillover from the venues, but close enough to walk) will rent for $1700/mo when I put it on the market in a few months. Check craigslist and search for Tobin Hill to see what else is available on the market, or also check www.hardwoodrentals.com, a site that specializes in inside-the-bubble rentals.
