Karen Martinez is reason enough to ignore the government. If she is over 50 then she needs to go into a new business because she looks great. I'm thinking she's only in her lower 30's at the most, though. It is an awful disease and my wife is scheduled to get one done in the near future as well. I'd rather have her around than listen to the stupid government.

After the story about her cancer diagnosis ran, co-anchor Michael Valdes commented that Karen is well under age 40. I'm also thinking she's in her early 30s.

That's just it, many women get it when they are under 40. This whole 50 thing is just a money issue and not putting womens health first. I bet they don't raise the testing for prostate cancer to 50........

For what it's worth, when I had the mammo in 2007, the tech took the first set of pictures then came back, told me she needed more so back in I went, and then again a third time for more. I finally asked what's going on so I spoke to the radiologist who said she wasn't sure there wasn't something there so an ultrasound was done that found the mass. Afterwards my surgeon said he would have automatically ordered both tests as a mammo doesn't always see things that are further towards the chest wall.

So if they keep taking more and more pics, just tell them you want an ultrasound (or sonogram, same thing).

Hello Dopo! Everyones journey is different but in my case back in 1/2007, I could feel a "thickness" to my left breast only when I would lie on my stomach to sleep. A mammogram found nothing but the ultrasound found a large mass back near the chest wall. Surgery took what it could but left a small area behind so chemo came next. A year later it came back as another mass between my lungs and surgery was not an option so back to chemo and radiation.

While still under treatment it showed up in my bones (awful pain!)and skin so radiation was added to the mix. The idea is to keep it from growing/spreading and ideally to kill it off and have no further evidence of disease as long as you can. Breast cancer has 4 stages and late stage is #4 which is where I unfortunately am so we're trying to control it. I am grateful for every day and for my situation because there are so many others in worse situations.

I have yet to be able to return to work since walking is an issue with the bone aches, but with Gods favor I'll get well enough to at least try part-time. I've been a nurse for 34 years.

I've had family members that have met the challenge as you have and are in remission. They always give me hope where breast cancer is concerned. I thank God they were courageous like you.


My niece was diagnosed at age 36. Her son was only three months old when they discovered her cancer in a post partem check up. She had a rare type called triple cell carcinoma....meaning she actually had three different types of cancer all at once. I can't remember the statistics, but it's so hard to treat because some therapy would be successful only on one or two types of the cancer. They never did find the right formula that worked on all three. She had three surgeries, chemo, and finally radiation when it had spread to her brain. Her battle lasted three years and she passed away months short of her 40th birthday. Her wish was to start a foundation that helps younger women who have been diagnosed with cancer and have small children to raise. Her children were 3 and 5 when she passed away. Her husband did indeed start a foundation and they have raised over $200,000 in the DFW area and have paid for child care and tuition for young children of mother's battling cancer. It seems like a small amount in the big picture of things, but it has reached others who are joining the support of younger cancer victims.

And Sapphire....you're right about the insane legislation being suggested. My niece spent her time talking to many other young women and found statistics that show cancer in younger women is on the rise. I cannot begin to comprehend any reason that makes sense for our government to suggest messing with this! If they do, I would be the first one in Washington advocating the same "reasoning" for changing requirements for prostate cancer checks!
