Giz2000 - Do you mind if I ask what the teaching position is? There are a number of us on this forum that have been looking for teaching jobs for quite some time, and would love to know of any places that are hiring/can help us get hired.

Don't mind firstclassflyer....he/she seems to believe just because SA is over 50% Hispanic, you need to know Spanish. You'll be fine whether you know Spanish or not.

Do you know in which school district you would be placed? And max. distance you would be willing to live from where you will be teaching? That might help others give more specific info on high schools, housing prices, etc.

It's important to know where you'll be teaching; I taught for 11 years with a 19-mile commute; it gets old after a while. There were a few times (once or maybe twice a year) when it took me well over an hour. Road construction can really slow you down.

amye1158 - would you consider private school? We have quite a few and the pay is quite comparable to public school at the bigger private schools. What subject do you teach?

I will be teaching Elementary ESL as part of Teach for America. I have been placed in the SAISD, but have no idea what school yet. I do know there's a hiring fair in SAISD on June 15 & 16. It's on the district website... good luck!

I was placed in the SAISD but I don't want to live downtonwn, so we're looking at somewhere in the NEISD or NISD. A 45 minute commute is short for me...it takes me 40 minutes to get to work now...and that's going against traffic!
