There really are beautiful neighborhoods close to Fort Sam, worth considering.

I've spent a total of 5½ years at the Fort, and lived up in Geln Burnie which usually wasn't a bad commute but it's been almost 15 years since I left so who knows what it is like now. But I have been up to the DC area a few times recently and the traffic here is nowhere near as bad as it is in the Baltimore-Washington area.

Also, I would consider the PX at Ft Sam to be a large one; the same with Lackland's. At best the BX at Randolph is medium-sized; and I've only been in the commissary there on a few occassions but again I would say it is medium-sized as compared to the large ones at Ft Sam and Lackland.

Oh, and for smuboy86, I realize that you can't take 281 directly into Ft Sam; but it comprises the majority of the fastest route from the Stone Oak area to the post (15 of the 20 miles). That is taking it all the way to IH-35, then east towards the south entrance of post, which would be the quicker route.

Cheers! M2
