Me too, I love the occasions when I have to be downtown early before it awakes. I've been to a few conferences at the Gonzales Center and I go in early to have breakfast at Shilo's then sit in front of the Alamo for a while just to take it in. I enjoy walking along the Riverwalk when it is quiet and there isn't many people about, and just looking at all the interesting architecture of some of the buildings.

You're coming from New Jersey and you're worried about little ol' San Antonio? Maybe I've watched too many episodes of The Sopranos.
Honestly, I worked downtown for many years and even became familiar with some of the homeless. I never felt I was in any danger. Besides, I've known plenty of criminals who have homes and were much more dangerous. As someone else mentioned, homelessness doesn't equal dangerous.

I define downtown as the area between 35, 37, 90, and the Ft. Sam at&t center line to the north. It is by far the most disgusting downtown I have seen in the U.S. Even Detroit at least has character and is supposed to be gritty. Downtown SA is just a mess with no organization and no appeal.

I love downtown. I worked downtown for several months on a project. My office was in the Tower Life building, and I enjoyed every minute of it - I just really enjoyed being so close to the Riverwalk and able to stroll La Villita at lunch. I'd actually love to live in a condo downtown but my husband doesn't want to - he wants a house/yard.

Downtown is safe. Most homeless people are not a danger. I went on a business trip to Philadelphia recently and walked down the street from my hotel to Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, etc. during the day and night and nobody messed with me except to ask for a smoke or some cash. It's to be expected sometimes.
