I'm a single female relocating from New Jersey to San Antonio, TX. I flew down to SA a few days ago for a job interview and I'm concerned about my safety. On the day of the interview, I left my hotel around 7:30 am to eat breakfast near the river walk. As I was walking around the downtown area, I noticed that most of the businesses weren't open and I saw a lot of homeless people walking around. I saw a couple of homeless men sleeping on a sidewalk. Then, as I was trying to find my way back to the hotel, a homeless man asked me for money. I didn't give him any money because it would be stupid for a female to open up her purse and give a strange man her money.

I'm from a really nice area in New Jersey and I'm not used to seeing so many homeless people. I'm concerned because I'm supposed to be working in the downtown area and I'm supposed to be leaving work early in the morning. How safe is it for a single female to be walking to the parking lot after work in the downtown area? This could be a deal breaker for me. I mean I know that homelessness is a problem every where, but I feel that my safety is an issue. If I decide to take the job, I will definitely buy some pepper spray!

Why does "homeless" equal "dangerous" to you? In all likelihood, you were in no danger. Presumably you will be walking to the parking lot at night about the same time as everyone else getting off work. just because you encounter homeless people does not mean you are in danger. Use your street smarts and common sense going to and from your car and you'll be just fine.

You'll find the same homeless situation in the downtown area of any major city. I assume you've been to New York, Philly, Newark, etc. and have seen it for yourself. That said, why settle for pepper spray when you can carry a pistol in your purse? This is Texas, after all.

Because of our warm climate we have homeless from all over the country...Maybe even NJ...Maybe you'll recognize some.

San Antonio is the tenth largest city inthe US, And the 2nd in Texas...If your not sure of yourself in a larger city...no amount of pepper spray or members posts...telling you "you'll be fine"... is going to help.

Being a Major US City we are going to have Homless People. We are no different that anywhere else.

You will find that they keep to themselves. Working for a Major City Utility I have been Downtown at all hours of the day and night. It is not as bad as you think. I am just as approachable as anyone else and it has NEVER been a problem.

As far as Safety don't worry. Millions of people flock to Downtown yearly. If there is one place that Police Partol is heavy it's Downtown. That does not mean that it's unsafe though.

By the way you do not have to speak Sanish to visit or live in San Antonio.

Don't worry, they all go back to New Jersey when the weather up there warms up!

downtown SA is nasty. I've lived here since 2001 and probably haven't been down there 10 times, although I am about to go near there in a little bit, but that's only because the gun show happens to be located there.

I love downtown San Antonio, it is beautiful. I walk the riverwalk at least monthly and of course drive down there when I can, there is so much to see.
