I survived numerous hurricane seasons in Florida, so comparatively I don't feel as concerned living in San Antonio where the greatest natural threats are flash floods (which are over with quickly). We have never lost power here like we did in Florida, I can't recall ever losing it for more than an hour. And hurricanes at most bring some rain, we are too far inland to feel the brunt of the full storm.

As such, I am less inclined to worry about SHTF scenarios. Still, it's always good to have some provisions ready just in case; but for the most part I don't subscribe to the apocalyptic ramblings of the tin hat society. There is little chance of a governmental collapse or some extreme financial situation that would require going into a primitive survival mode…

I understand it's the flooding that kills more people than any other natural disaster, it's also the most common cause of death from natural storms like hurricanes, tropical storms, tsunamis, etc.

An MRE wont' save you there!

LOL, I'm not expecting to tie MRE's together & use them as a life vest! Preparing for the SHTF scenarios is more like it. I hope & pray never to need it - at worst we have extra food & supplies, right?

Thanks again for all the ideas

Just stating fact. We are our own worst enemy...especially in times of turmoil. Bear in mind that this would be beyond "shtf" type of stuff

If she wants her MREs let her have her MREs. My goodness. I'll stick to bean and cheese tacos in case of the end of the world.
