I'll be in San Antonio next week for my son's Air Force BMT graduation. I would love some local recs for places to eat that are not your typical tourist traps. I love Mexican food, but sushi joints, good, crusty pizza and the like are also favorites. Any recs would be greatly appreciated!

PS - We'll be staying near Riverwalk...

The only place you will really see "tourist traps" is downtown, just avoid chains or places that look corporate owned (but even some of these are good). Some consider MI TIERRAS a tourist place, but locals eat there too. By in large, you will find the best Mexican food outside downtown.

Lots of great threads here on pizza and Asian, should give you plenty of pointers.

Casa Rio on the Riverwalk is popular and good.

Los Barrios is considered by many the best Mexican food--4223 Blanco Rd.

Mi Tierra (sp?)--near Riverwalk--famous, open 24 hrs.--very good Mexican

Schilo's Deli--excellent breakfast or anytime. On Commerce by river entrance

I disagree about the restaurants on the Riverwalk being tourist traps. Because of competition, all are high quality and reasonably priced. The chains are fine--Hard Rock Cafe, The Rain Forest Cafe (delightful), Pat O'Brien's

If you haven't been to one before, Dick's Last Resort on the Riverwalk. The food isn't bad, but the service is outstanding

Is Dick's Last Resort the same as the Dick's restaurant where they're suppoes to be rude? If so, went there for the first time. Over-priced food, not enough portion they give, and definitely not rude enough to me lol. Definitely a trap, and a waste of money.

I agree with the Soluna recommendation. La Fogata is similar to Soluna and I like the ambiance better, however, the food is better at Soluna imo. I would definitely avoid any mexican food on the riverwalk. I would also recommend Mi Tierra for any visitor, food is hit or miss depending on what you order (the fajitas are always good) but ambiance is great.

Ive been in SA for 2 weeks now and was taken to Rolando's Super Taco and loved it. The tacos are big and the food is great. The area is more of the downtown area so its not the prettiest flower in the garden but all that is forgotten after eating this food.

We took my SIL to Mi Tierra when her and my brother visited. She is originally from Illinois and she really enjoyed it there - both the atmosphere and the food. I think it is a really nice place to go for drinks and dinner and the atmosphere really is great. Have fun!
