Those are the ones that look like half alligator half fish right?

I've heard that the SA river, about an hour or two south of the city has some. I don't know how true that is, but I would definitely like to see. I have also heard that their populations at dwindling. If that's so hopefully you'll consider the catch and release method.

I enjoy fishing but when I do so I keep in mind the fragility of the ecosystem.

Hmm. I've seen them in Corpus, Labonte Park. I did see a smaller variety, 'spotted gar' I think , at the KOA in San Antonio. If you find them around here make sure you share!

Texas has a 1 fish per day bag limit on Gar, effective Sep. 2009. TPWD: News Release: March 26, 2009: Alligator Gar Bag Limit to go into Effect Sept. 1, 2009

I thought Gar was something you caught accidentally, not on purpose. And then, beat it to death with a rock. At least that is what the old timers did.

my youngest saw one at Labonte a year or so ago, that someone had caught and set next to their picnic table. Right when she looked at it, it gaped open really wide for a second, and she climbed up my leg screaming....quite funny, but she must have been terrified! And, we were like 30-40 feet away, and it appeared to be looking right at her!

I have seen catch & realease outing fish trip things... but are they edible?... something tells me I read somewhere that they are not that great a tasting fish... I like Pops hope you do the catch & release thing too. I have seen awful bloodied pix of these poor creatures, hanging next to neanderthals.
Speaking of prehistoric. When I first saw a picture of these things my eyes almost popped out of my head! They are something straight out of dinosaur times. What a awesome & FREAKY looking creature I like to see one in person, alive of course!

they have a "gamie" (if that's how you spell it) taste. Pretty wild and not for some. I don't know if there's an exact place to catch them. They are pretty rare.
Hard to catch too due to their sharp teeth. Many a times they cut the line before you ever have a chance to see it.
Word of advice, do be very cautious with these. They are large, powerful, and their teeth will split skin in an instant. We used to carry a bat (or large blunt object), and a small .22 handgun just in case.
