Planning a move to San Antonio, TX later this year.
We are an elderly couple and I am a Military Retiree.
We will be looking for a furnished apartment to rent
on a short term or long term basis. Prefer to be near
a military base and hospital I am a licensed driver.
Any advice or ideas will be appreciated.
Thank you.

It's not necessary in San Antonio...but maybe you can pick up some words along the way. Did you take a look at the relocation thread?

Ignore the comment about Spanish, it isn't necessary to know it here.

I am also retired (2006), but at still working as a contractor on Lackland AFB, so I will try to provide you with some useful information.

First, as you may know, there are three main military bases here and two smaller Army posts. The main ones are Lackland AFB, Ft Sam Houston, and Randolph AFB. The two posts are Camps Bullis and Stanley. There are some facilities at Bullis, such as a clinic and a small exchange; but Stanley is a weapons storage area and little else.

There are two main military hospitals, Wilford Hall on Lackland and Brook Army Medical Center at Ft Sam.

As you might expect, the military retiree community is huge here. The town is very military-friendly and between that and the warmer weather, it draws a lot of retirees here. As such, there are numerous apartment complexes within a half hour's drive of both Lackland and Ft Sam that have military and retired military residents.

Personally, I would recommend looking west and northwest of Lackland, as most of that area is newer therefore the apartment complexes are as well. The corridor along 151 has several new complexes going up so you should be able to find one that fits your needs with little trouble. From there it is only a 15-minute or so drive to Lackland and Wilford Hall.

The area around Ft Sam is older, as are the apartments, so finding one in nice shape may be a little more challenging.

Hope that helps, and welcome to San Antonio!

Cheers! M2

majormadmax pretty much hit the nail on the head, however I was wondering with all the new development at Fort Sam, are there any new apartments or condos being built in the area?? jw.

Sorry, I just realized you were looking for furnished apartments, which will narrow the list. To be honest, I am only familiar with the ones over in the Medical Center area and what I do know about them is that they are not cheap! We stayed in one for about a month and a half and paid more for it than we do our mortgage!

The other furnished places we looked at that were cheaper were not in the best parts of town, so it might be a better idea to find a small apartment that is unfurnished and then furnish it as inexpensively as you can yourself. Trust me, the furnished one we stayed in wasn't filled with the top-of-the-line furnishing as you would have expected for the price we are paying.

Cheers! M2
