I will be working in the medical center (410), and my spouse will be working downtown (Durango Street). We need good public or private schools. Our son has only attended a small christian-private school (class size 15-17 students) since he was 3, and he will be in the 5th grade next year. My mom is coming with us to watch the baby and hates traffic. I would like minimal commute time for us both, so we have more time with the kids at night.

Where do you recommend we live?
What private schools should we consider?
What private schools should be avoid?

Thanks for your honesty!

May I suggest taking a look through the relocation sticky? There is tons of information and good suggestions. Good luck!

OP you should live at Vance Jackson and I-10. Can't help you on the Christian schools, but there are gobs of them in town. Good luck and bienvenidos a San Antonio. You're so lucky to have already landed jobs (for both of you! ) that is just amazing. You should share your secrets!

Monte Vista or Olmos Park would give you very easy commutes to both downtown (5-8 minutes) and the medical center (10 minutes). Traffic is never an issue in those areas. You will likely have a reverse commute to the medical center (assuming you work days).

St. Anthony's, Keystone, and several other privates in the area or you could pay tuition to Alamo Heights schools. Central Catholic would be an option later for HS.

Living between 10 and 281 in between 410 and 1604 would be the option. That'll give you NEISD and NISD schools to choose from and there are plenty of Christian schools in that area. Welcome to San Antonio!

The traffic is not as bad as other cities. You should live in north central San Antonio. There are some neighborhoods near the Medical Center ( not that appealing IMO ) but I would try caste hills out. There are some really nice old houses there that seem very appealing and it is centrally located for you and your spouse.

Private schools: All of them are pretty much good. The worst private school can be even better than the best public school ( mostly because of the environment the child is in ). Try Cornerstone, Keystone ( World-renown test scores ), St. Lukes, St. Matthews, Holy Spirit, St. Marys Hall ( Very Expensive ). As your child gets older, there are many great High Schools to choose from. Some of these schools I mentioned are from elementary to high school like Cornerstone and St Marys Hall. Some of these schools also are full so there is a waiting list. And some of them you have a best tested to get in ( I believe Keystone is one ).

Some of the best schools in San Antonio are also magnet schools such as Health Careers, but that's a High School.

Good luck on your move!
