Newk - funny to see your question posted - I just had this conversation with the gals at work - that I have allowed my TWC bill to creep up over the years without asking "WHY" - so I called and got the latest/greatest promotion package and my bill is suppose to go down about $40 as a result....we'll see

And now you're locked in, right?

I don't like having to call. Just give me the fair price--I'm a good customer and have been with them (when possible, i.e. lived at an apt. complex that only offered Grande) for years and years. If I looked in my bill box long enough, I could probably find one with Paragon's name on it....just be FAIR! If you are going to raise the prices, give me more for my money.

so i dump the cable yesterday and today get a mailer:

all the best (what i had) for a great low price of 144.99 (i paid 117.99)

so i read the fine print here and it says you get two hd-dvr boxes now, but free dvr service is only for one box. most importantly it come with a 2 yr contract that automatically renews for TWO more 2 yr cycles unless you cancel it yourself. lets not get into the early termination fee...

in all fairness they did add some stuff to the package to "justify" a higher price but nothing i would have wanted.

I say all of this as an observer, as anyone who keeps up with my TWC postings knows I'm no fan of theirs. They indiscriminately raise prices without letting their customers know: I think that's out-and-out fraud. It's why I'm now enjoying DirecTV and have been for the past year.

I'm no fan of TW, either (haven't used them in over twelve years), but if you are thinking about jumping ship in favor of Dish/DirecTV/U-verse, they have all implemented recent rate hikes as well. I think Dish Network hit customers with multiple receivers/DVRs pretty hard this year. I think most Dish customers with only one receiver escaped unscathed this year, though. Dish & DirecTV have had annual price hikes on most programming packages for the past several years. Still, you might be able to save by switching providers, depending on your level of services.

As Bowie stated, it seems to be the programmers that are pretty much driving this. They keep demanding increased fees every time they renew their carriage agreements. If the cable/satellite providers balk, they'll threaten to pull their channels. I'm wondering when this practice is going to cause end users to reach the tipping point.

Looking at the front page of the forum, it occurred to me tonight that the title of the other front page thread about Time-Warner might also be one of the company's explanations about why rates are going up.

Time Warner adds more HD channels

My gripe with TW is that I specifically put a lock on our account so my lazy couch potato good for nothing husband could not add any more crap to our bill. Two months ago he goes down to the office to return our cable box which stopped working. Comes back with a brand new remote, some recording device, this and that, bla, bla, bla -- bottom line 60 more bucks to my bill.

Where's the loyalty TW? Huh?

"On the 10 o'clock news -- woman beats husband to death with remote control. Judge rules he had it coming."

I hate having to play the game but sometimes it's necessary. Play the AT&T VS TWC card, they lowered our bill by about 40% once I mentioned switching to AT&T.

i tried that threat the last time our contract was up and they were like...good luck, see you later. I had gotten this incredible price/package a few years ago which they continue to honor with minor increases -- still, the lowest price I could find with a competitor was $30 more then what I was paying -- prior to said husband's recent add-ons -- and didn't include all the free movie channels I'm already getting. They knew...like the mob...Time Warner knew they had me. Once you're in...you never get out.

Maybe it's time to change the husband, not the TV programming provider.

Not locked in that I agreed to......but will check that out! We've been with them 10+ years as well......I don't want to change in all honesty - but like you - I hate having to call when they offer some 'honeymoon package' to new account holders!
