I'm sick of the nasty winters in Illinois and this town (14th most miserable according to Forbes). I finally got my RN License for Texas. I think I'll be polishing up on my resume this weekend.

I know threads like these have been discussed here ad nauseum. I've spent countless hours sipping wine and perusing sites such as rent.com and apartmentfinder. Unfortunately, the apartment reviews that I've read for most places are several years old; rated by 1-2 people and I haven't read a decent review yet.

Any suggestions for a 1 bedroom apartment in the medical area or the north in the 7-800 dollar range? I might have to break down and spend more for a place with a garage. I just don't want to live in a section 8 apartment complex, gangs or have to deal with loud parties. I plan on buying a house after I've lived in the area for a year or so and know the area better.

Thanks for visiting my thread

Try renting a house, so you get a feel for the area

Congrats on getting your RN license for Texas.

Here is a listing of many apartments in the Medical area that will get you going in the right direction.

san antonio apts/housing for rent classifieds - craigslist

Good Luck!

BTW: My daughter and her husband used to live in Rockford, Illinois. Needless to say, they moved back here to San Antonio several years ago.

I have no connection to these apartments, nor do I really know anything about them. They are on Medical drive between I-10 and Fredericksburg Rd. It's a gated community. I've always thought the property looked very appealing and well kept.

Promontory Pointe - Apartments in San Antonio

The problem with apartment hunting is the rating sites are often rigged and give little information on the property itself. You need to find the website of the actual property. If they don't have one, that should tell you a lot.

I would highly recommend an apartment locator service. It cost you nothing, and often they know of move-in specials and even help with moving costs.
Almost all properties use locator services because they do not want empty inventory sitting vacant for too long. Since you are long distance, insist on only properties that have GOOD information online, ie floorplans, amenities, pet guidelines, rent and maps.

Good luck and congratulations.

Just an added note.....average rent on a decent property is about $1 a square foot per month. I.E....a 700 sq foot apt should be close to $700 a month unless you are in a high dollar area. The newer the property the higher that price goes up and the square footage goes down. Promontory was built maybe 10 years ago? I can't remember.

And when you DO find a complex you like, do a drive "by and through" at night. That'll tell you lots. The hoodlums like to sleep all day and start rousing in the evenings.

The Abbey at Grande Oaks, right by the med center and one of the few complexes that has a parking garage.

Congraulations!
Do you have to live in the Medical Center? If so, then buy now.
If your "feeling out the area", then I suggest an area that fulfills all of your criteria. After a 12 hour shift - do you want to go to the same restaurants you went to for lunch? I understand your situation, and would suggest that you consider expanding your search area.
I'd suggest some of the newer apartments around the Quarry. They have beautiful apartments, townhouses, condo's and home leases that are dirt cheap due to economy. Yes, you'll spend a few minutes getting to work, but San Antonio isn't bad at all - especially doing 7-7 shifts.

No, I don't have to live in the Medical area. I just thought it would be convenient. Then again, I'll only be working 3 days a week. The positions I've applied for are nights 7p-7a, so I'm guessing my commute home will be during rush hour...right?

You will find lots to choose from in the medical center, but with only working 3 days per week, might want to consider other areas too depending on your interests. You could certainly find the commute from the medical center to something you would spend your other 4 days a week enjoying equally as fustrating as a work commute. We own a rental in the med center, and I think you would be able to find a small home/condo for the price range you are asking, so a garage would not be out of the question at all.

I agree with DJB you might find other areas far more interesting/diverse.

Rush hour will be pretty died down by then. Might want to also look around the downtown area.
