I know that many San Antonians miss the burgers that GW Jr's used to serve. Who can forget the sad day that they all seemed to fall off the face of the planet.

The other day I had the California-style burger from Freddy's (Custard). I could have sworn it tasted just like GW Jr's. (I'm wondering if it's anything like In'N'Out, a famous California burger place which I've never been to.) It seemed to use the same basic ingredients: lettuce, tomato, onions, (no pickles), and mayo-based sauce, like GW Jr's used to have.

Has anyone else tried this. What did you think?

I still can't believe GW Jr.'s didn't make it any longer than it did. Haven't tried that burger you mentioned, but maybe I should!

I liked GW Jr's !! Too bad they were abandoned by Church's. Remember the Silver Dollar burgers?? Last ditch effort at success ........

I think we should write to church's to bring back GW jr's, maybe some of those old items on their menu. Don't think that would hurt at all.

I don't think Freddy's and In-N-Out are the same. In-N-Out has some odd but really good sauce. It's kinda addicting in a bad way.

I always have the California burger when I go to Freddy's, but didn't make the connection. Looking back, yeah, it is a reasonable facsimile.

Wasn't GW's founded by the son of the Church's founder?

I do miss their hot dogs, and that is coming from someone who doesn't care for hot dogs. Excellent chili on their dogs and burgers. As a meaningless aside, I had the inspection cover work loose from the transmission on my Monza one night. The gasket split as a result. The next morning I grabbed one of the trays they used to serve those monsters on from out of the trash and fashioned a replacement gasket out of it. It lasted until long after I had sold the car.

Coney Island? They've been mentioned here a number of times. I used to grab a bag filled with them before heading to the drive-ins (extra onions please). A very messy endeavor. They were never the same after moving to their Broadway location.
