I think the main reason it is still around is that Freeman Coliseum is still needed for rodeo events.

I don't see it getting much use the rest of the year.

The coliseum itself gets a little use but I would bet that the AT&T folks are salivating over getting their hands on all of that land and clearing it for some mega-whatever. There are a lot of buildings and land that is not used except for the rodeo. I am a member of the Southwest Gem and Mineral Society. We were the only tenents for the rodeo grounds all year when we put on out annaul show in late March in the Morris Activity Center. When we went to renew our contract with the San Antonio Livestock Exposition after the 2007 show we were told we had to go through the coliseum booking dept. Our rental rates rose so high that it was obvious that someone wanted to keep those buildings empty. We were forced to move our show to Live Oak and forego having a show in 2008. I felt like we were kind of kicked to the curb with no notice. It wouldn't suprize me to hear someone making a case that it's not worth keeping any of that infastructure and that it would make more sense to sell it to make way for Wallyworld III.

Yes it does get ...some...use but not many of the events really require a coliseum type venue. They even moved the rodeo out of the Freeman and put it in the At&t center. The once great Coliseum has lost it's shine. Call ma a cynic but I beleive there is more money to be had by those who know how to get there hands on it by grabing some tax money to build, build, and build some more. They will do it in the name of improving the east side but the people pushing the building will not care squat about the east side or San Antonio for that matter.
