Hello Good People,
I lived in SA for 15 happy years, and the 2 things I loved the most were the people and the FOOD! When it comes to Tex-Mex, you people got it locked down. So now it's been nearly 15 years since I've been back, and I will only be there for one day (in April). I want to eat the BEST D*MN plate of Mexican food I can get my hands on, and I was hoping you would help me out. I am looking for the real deal...excellent chili gravy, cloud-like tortillas, chili con queso that is closer to white than yellow (you following me?)...AND, I am not necessarily looking for a pretty place (or a tourist joint)...I'm not afraid of some old dive.
So, tell me friends: Where am I eating lunch?

Take your pick...San Antonio Mexican Restaurants: 10 Best Mexican Restaurant Reviews.

Or, if it helps, here's a map...

I've always heard Mi Tierra Cafe & Bakery is good as well, but we've never tried it. We prefer el Chaparral, but that's because it's close to us in Helotes.

Welcome back, even if it's just for one day!

Cheers! M2

El Chapparal. I was raised in S.A., travel the city on business routinely, and it's the ONE place I recommend to folks looking for top-shelf. Mi Tierra is the place to send tourists - in all honesty, it world-reknown - but that's because of their political hob-knobbin', IMO. At one time it WAS outstanding, but no longer, IMO.

You want some real authentic mexican food (sorry not tex-mex). Go to La Michocana on West Ave inside the Loop. It's really a meat market and grocery store, but they have a section where you can order freshly made food....chiles rellenos, enchilades mexicanas and other great stuff. I'd recommend it for lunch and not dinner.

Check what they have, then go to the cash register and pay -- take your receipt and order up and take your food to booths and tables they have there (seats about 20 people). Nothing fancy, but great food. Cruise the aisles and take a few products back home with you at the same time. You won't regret it.

Thousand Oaks Cafe on Austin Hwy has great breakfast tacos. Lunches and dinners, Tomtillos on Broadway, close to Brackenrigde Park. Great food at both places
