How would someone go about getting to sit in the cockpit of the SR-71 on display there? I always wanted to sit in one and touch the skin.

I'd imagine that even though they're retired, you'd be hard pressed to get into that cockpit. That would be an awesome experience though.

I'm pretty sure that for safety reasons, entry into the cockpits are disabled on planes that are permanently on display.

I was referring more to the security clearance than safety. There's no way that thing is starting up, but the SR-71, though antiquated by our standards, is pretty advanced for other military technology.

It's definitely not starting up, you are right about that! Everything has been stripped from it. Basically it's just the body. I don't think you'll get any clearance to sit in it, mainly because I believe the hatch is bolted shut.

I love the Blackbird. Amazing plane.

M2F is correct, it is a static display and has been gutted (no engines, avionics, instruments, etc). Seeing and touching it is no problem, but there is no way to get into it...

Isn't the Blackbird mostly a fly-by-wire aircraft with a tiny windshield? It was designed for speed and altitude, so there wasn't much need for a great vantage point for the pilot. With no cockpit avionics, there wouldn't be much to see.

SR-71 cockpit diagrams

To the OP, there is a SR-71 cockpit simulator at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at Love Field up in Dallas if you're that interested in what it's like to sit in the cockpit...

What must've been awesome was the experience flying it! This is a great story behind this magnificent machine that was posted on another forum...
