I have a large amount of restaurant food that I need to donate today. It is good and not expired.

I have a lot of canned goods, but they are restaurant sized cans (gallon size) and a lot of fresh veggies.

The SA Food bank is not open today. Anyone know of any homeless shelters or churches that serve the homeless that I could give this stuff to, today or tomorrow at the latest?

Thanks~!

If you call 211, they might be able to recommend a place that will take your donation today.

Today, Saturday, is the day the Metropolitan Community Church (611 E. Myrtle San Antonio, TX 78212) gives food to those in need.

For most of last year, I had to go there every Saturday at 6-8AM (and wait until 11 to 12PM) just to get food because I didn't qualify for foodstamps at the time (was out of a job for months).Their number: 472-3597.

Even if you cannot reach someone by phone, I GUARANTEE you staff will be there all day long (just drop it off) because they are there from 8am in the morning for the food pantry until 2PMish and all day long there are other staff on hand because during the late evening on Saturdays they have choir practice, get togethers, worship service and other activities. The guy who runs the food pantry is Tim just ask for him.

Please, strongly consider donating to them. They really help so many in need; every Saturday many are lined up and people even get there at 6 or 7AM and wait hours just to get food.

Do they prepare food? I am imagining someone waiting in live for a gallon can of Tomato Puree... I'm thinking a place that actually prepares food would be the best option.

The San Antonio Aids Foundation on Grayson. they prepare food for the residents and for outsiders to come in a get a meal. I've donated left over food from parties and large cook outs to them and they are glad to have it.

Very often they give out seperate five gallon cans of pitted olives, whole tomates, and applesauce. Yes, five gallons! And people waiting in line are very grateful and don't mind the size. You also mentioned you have fresh veggies. They give out a lot of veggies there also! In the past they've had 10 or 20 huge racks of lettuce, bannanas and squash.

I'm just now finishing up the 2nd of five gallon can of olives that I received about 4 or 5 months ago! I threw it in some pasta tonight My food stays good because I use FoodSaver.
