Would like to avoid traffic and construction and maybe coming from either Dripping Springs or Elgin. Any suggestions? I prefer to avoid 35, but don't want to add a ton of time to the trip.

Directions to Seaworld can be found at: Location and Directions. From Dripping Springs you could take either 35 or 281, and if you're coming on a weekend the traffic is not likely to be much different on either route. If you're coming on a weekday, plan to hit the I-35/1604 or 281/1604 junction before 7am or after 8:30am to avoid the bulk of traffic. If I were you, I'd take 281 because it's a prettier route and about 20 minutes shorter (unless you hit traffic). You probably don't need to worry about evening rush hour since the park closes at 9 on weekends and 6 during the week... rush hour here is typically over by 6:30.

When we lived in Austin we came down to Sea World several times on the weekends and didn't have much of a problem, just come early and stay late! I've also taken the Hwy 281 route north, it is longer but more scenic. The problem is once you hit San Antonio, 281 South can become very congested any time. I would check the TxDOT site first to make sure there is no construction on I-35 south on the day you are coming (though it is usually past the 1604 turn-off, exit 172).

A word of advice: Come to Sea World on a Sunday if you can, especially during the summer months. A lot less crowded. I vowed to never return on a Saturday after we went there once with some friends and couldn't see some of the shows. Now we just live 10 minutes away so it's a little more convenient! But traffic on I-35 and 1604 really shouldn't be an issue. Of course, once you pass Bandera on 1604 you hit the infamous Freeway That Turns Into A Road With Lights section, which is very annoying because traffic usually builds up quickly because of the lights.

I would take 35 south till I hit 1604 on the north side near the forum shopping center. Go right ( I think it is west or north). And take it around to 151 (there are signs once you are on 1604 close to Seaworld). It is a little longer but there is nothing going on on 1604 in that whole stretch barring any accidents.

Traffic would only be of concern during the school year in the between 7-830 and again at 430 - 630 on weekdays along 1604. When they first open traffic around seaworld itself can get a bit thick but there is no avoiding it if that is where you are going.

If you come down 281 I would do the same thing. turn on 1604 and go to 151.

I'd take 410 to 151. Traffic on 1604 gets stacked up between Bandera Rd and New Guilbeau even on the weekends. If there are no lane closures 410 is faster.

If you're arriving right at the same time as Sea World opening, especially on a Saturday, I'd stay on the frontage road to Wiseman Road from 151 and take a right. From there you'll turn Left on Ellison and skip some of the waiting at the park gates getting in.

You'll probably be okay along 1604 in the morning but I'd definitely do 151-410 in the afternoon/evening depending on time. 1604 if always so busy from about 4 p.m. on.

Have a great visit!
