Why do they pay their employees such little money? I was visiting their HR web page and was shocked at what the starting salary is for employees. Is this the norm around San Antonio?

Salaries are low in San Antonio, compared to the rest of the country - even compared to the rest of Texas.

I thought this was common knowledge!

It is. Neighbor and I shared a chuckle about this recently.

Yes I knew they were low but to request someone with a bachelors degree and offer 10.00 per hour threw me for a loop!

Being a current Alamo College District employee, I can say that our salaries are higher than UTSA and other local universities. A UTSA student advisor can make $27K with a minimum of a bachelors degree. Alamo College advisors can make an average of $36K. If it is one thing I have learned about being an employee of the district, it is that its not the level of education you have, but what you know about the college and their processes.

All ACCD schools pay their adjunct instructors $2,200 per class taught (3 hour class) in a semester.

There are some instructors who barely make ends meet and have to live on teaching only 1 or 2 classes the entire semester. Teaching availability changes from semester to semester and of course there's no job security in it. By contrast, full time ACCD instructors get paid about two times more than a part timer (adjunct) plus benefits.

Also, at UTSA, their adjuncts get paid more than at ACCD schools and I think they also get benefits. The ACCD give absolutely no benefits to their adjuncts.

Wages are lower because the cost of living here is lower.

Not that low. When you're a college grad and you are getting paid the same wage as a high school kid slinging bbq at Bill Millers, something is wrong.

What's probably wrong is the individual chose a degree field where the jobs, or at least this job, only pays $10hr.

Employers know what they have to offer in order to fill a position, they aren't going to offer a dime more unless they have to.
