Can't say anything about schools...property taxes can be found here.

Regarding taxes -- I just searched a coworker's house in Stone Oak, using bcad.org.

On a $446,000 house, the taxes were $12,000 per year.

We're in the same boat, we're moving from California in less than 2 weeks. I dunno where we're going to live either.

Depending on where you are moving from, the taxes in San Antonio seem to be very high. We're in CA and on our 400,000 house I spend about $350 a month or so in taxes (it changes every year). I think in San Antonio for the same house it would be 700-1000 a month. So be aware of that when deciding on how much you are willing to spend on a home. However, housing in Texas is CHEAP! Once again, it depends on what you are used to, but we have been living in some of the most expensive markets in the nation for the last 10 years, and so housing in San Antonio has had my jaw on the floor.

I can't help you with schools and what not since we aren't there yet. From what I have read the schools in the northern area are generally regarded as good schools, and the schools in the central east and some southern parts of the city are not. But who knows? One person's bad school can be another person's great school. It depends on what you are looking for in a school.

There was a recent report out that stated that the schools in Stone Oak were among the best in the state. I'm sure that is up for debate among many posters here. I actually live in Stone Oak, but my children attend private schools. From what I have seen and heard, however, all the schools in this area are rated very high.

Wow, I have sticker shock. My total mortgage PITI will be less than $1,000/month. I can't image paying that for just taxes alone even if I could buy a $400k house! I'm just mind boogled! My taxes for a $100k house are around $2,200/year.

Both NISD and NEISD have received high ratings, either would be great so that gives you a long list of places to chose from. Get a good realtor and that'll help a lot. If you need a suggestion let us know, ours helped us tremendously!

And welcome to SA!

Cheers! M2

Like anywhere else, you pay it one place or another....cost of doing business in Texas is a lot less than CA, which means prices in general are usually better. Our home is 2400+ sq. ft. sitting on a half-acre lot that overlooks the city of New Braunfels. 3 car garage, about 40k in upgrades. Current replacement cost would be about $238k. My BIL and SIL live in CA - their house is in the Long Beach area. 1600 sq ft, barely room in the back for a small pool - they paid something like $400k for it 10 years ago.
