I'm starting nursing school in the city of San Bernardino this fall and I need advice about where to live. The first year of my program will be in San Bernardino, and then I will have to go to the Azusa campus for the following two years. (I know it sounds silly.)

I currently live in Ohio but I used to live in Santa Monica and loved living there. I know no one in the Inland Empire... I still have friends in West LA/Santa Monica/Malibu/Calabasas and a brother in Malibu. I would like to live as far west as possible without the commute being TOO ridiculous. I'm also mid-twenties and female, so safety is a concern as well. Do you think it's possible for me to live in Pasadena? I was also thinking Rancho Cucamonga... but I think I would definitely move to Pasadena after the first year.

So basically: is the commute from Pasadena to San Bernardino too much?

Thanks so much for your help!

I live there.

It's suburban, I think moneyed (except for us! We're the b*stard children of Glendora), very safe, local to Rte. 66, local to Rte. 210, probably, I don't know, half an hour east of Pasadena on a really good traffic day. But probably more like 45 minutes from Pas on an average day.

There's, hmmm, let me see...WalMart, Home Depot, about nine thousand and ten fast food places, a Ralph's, a Stater Brothers, and a bunch of other shops. Oh, wait, and they're putting in a Borders soon.

Along Rte. 66 are eateries and stores and all that.

I live near the border of San Dimas...home of Bill and Ted.

It's pretty because people keep the town very green. All the lawns are manicured. Ours included--the landlord insists. Which I don't really mind. Go on realtor.com to find apartments in the area and you can get an idea of prices.

As far as I know, its just your typical suburban tract home bedroom community. It doesn't make the news much which is a good thing.

Oh. Doy. It's late. You were asking about San Bernardino, not Pasadena.

I *think* Glendora is within 45 minutes of San Bernardino, and as far as Azusa, well, that's like the next town over. Or a town or two over. Right around the corner.

You're not going to Azusa Pacific, are you?

OK! Hope this is enough info to get you started. BTW, I'm from the east too.

You know what other place you should check out? Claremont. ETA: Claremont is hip. Tons of shops, everything geared toward students b/c it's a college town. Many trees as compared to much of the rest of SoCali, so it might remind you a little bit of home.

Also:

Rancho Cucamonga
Upland
LaVerne

Thanks for your advice... I will look into Glendora. I've already researched Rancho Cucamonga a little... I hear it's one of the nicer places in San Bernardino County. Do you think commuting to San Bernardino to Pasadena is too ridiculous? That would be my ideal place to live, b/c then I wouldn't have to move again after a year. Yes, the school is Azusa Pacific.
