We are going to Big Bear Lake in a couple of days for several days of fishing and relaxing. Can someone tell me how bad the mosquito problem is up there and if there has been a lot of West Nile cases? I guess my question is heading towards do I need mosquito repellent and do I need to take a lot of precautions to prevent this virus while up there?

I spent all of my younger years living in Big Bear and my sister still lives there. Neither of us have heard of any West Nile cases up there. Yes, they do have mosquitos up there but it still gets pretty darn cold up there at night so they're not nearly as many as one might suspect. It never hurts to take a repellent since you will be on or near the lake obviously. If you are going to have any problems with the mosquitos it would be near the lake. Kick back and relax, enjoy your fishing and I sure wouldn't worry about the mosquitos or West Nile. Have a good time. : )

Default Lightning Danger

A big danger out fishing on the lake is lightning. Thunderstorms form this time of year in the afternoon. Check out Gray's (Grey's?) Landing if it is still there (it's been around for many, many years) for dock fishing and boat rental.

Default Thanks for your responses

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I will probably bring insect repellent but not worry too much about the West Nile.

And thanks for the tip on Gray's Landing. I'll surely check that out as well.
