Drive up 395 if you're going to Reno, it's FAR faster than the I-80 and it's straight all the way. No mountainous driving whatsoever and it's a straight line into Reno. Heavy CHP presence on 395, however.

Yes, take 395. Highway 50 is worse than 80. If you really want to scare yourself take 89 from South Tahoe to North, some really nasty cliffs there but great scenery for the passengers.

395 does not pass through San Francisco. Only I80 to Reno. When you say mountainous driving on 80, do you mean that I will be driving on the side of cliffs? Steep drops? What is it like?

I-80 doesn't go anywhere near SB/Riv counties.

a couple lanes, some solid yellow lines some dotted white ones, stay between the lines and you will be fine. Don't look at the cliffs if they bother you.

Lots of people post road trips on YouTube now, so you can actually preview the route yourself.

The following videos will show you (at high speed) the road from Auburn (near Sacramento and the beginning of foothills/mountains) to the city of Reno (however, the section of road from exit 158A/Emigrant Gap to Truckee is missing):
