Come now, is Barstow really that bad?

509 Clark St, Barstow, CA 92311 is For Sale - Zillow

You could pay cash for a shack.

The High Desert is such a good value. You can get a livable one for about that price in Boron.

Holy cow. That immediate area is like a 3rd world ghetto.

Dang! I missed the bottom a couple of years ago! I could have picked this up for 15 thousand in 2012!

The house across the street is cute though... looks like a freshly painted porch fence and a new spead of Astro Turf! At least someone is making lemonade outta lemons.

Hmmmm... Astro Turf... now there's an alternative for a live lawn or rock garden in this drought!

I don't see children begging on the street. Please pay a visit to an actual 3rd world country for a good point of comparison.

Pro.

Sun, views, sky, elevations. Up and downhill streets. Seasons and shadows where you can notice something in the mountains you haven't seen in 20 years of living there. Stucco, tile, palms, citrus. Take off for anything and be there in an hour or two or three. Larger, newer, and nicer houses. A close by and convenient airport. Traffic generally flows. Safe communities, and quiet streets. What you need is here, and everything else isn't very far. Oh yeah, the housing is slightly more affordable.

Cons.

Smog, which is only fixed by recessions and "winter". Long commutes for many. Rude drivers with bright lights, either in the rear view or opposite direction. SUV parades at the beginning and end of school days. Dumpy communities which outsiders claim are 100% of the area. The games LAWA is playing at ONT. The lack of local media outside of the PE. Housing is still so expensive your kids stick around for years.

What not to worry about

Snide references. Urbanists who hate Irvine and Santa Clarita just as much but don't admit how much of LA (and Chicago and NY for that matter) can't be distinguished from and inner ring suburb.
