Hello all! We are a military family having to get stationed in Ft Irwin, CA this coming fall. Apparently housing has a wait list so we may have to live in one of the surrounding cities. From what I have searched and googled, Barstow scares the hell outta me and I DO NOT want to move there, but we might not have a choice. All the reviews Ive read were pretty outdated, so does anyone know if Barstow has changed? Is the crime rate bad? Schools? I have 2 small kids, one ready to enter kindergarten and the other pre-school, so I was wondering how the schools were and if they had daycares available? Is there any other store besides Walmart? What is a good part of town to live in? Lol What is the next nearest good town? Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
Amber

We just left this past summer. At that time the only waiting lists for base housing were officer housing, but that may have changed. If you have to live in Barstow, rent a house up in the college heights area. Streets like Garnet, Canavan, and Amethyst and the area around those streets are fine. Your child would then go to Henderson Elementary, which is one of the better ones...still not great but it is the school that the Marine Base kids go to, so it is one of the better ones.

You can enroll your child in the school on FT. Irwin, but that will mean a long commute and day for a kindergartener. He/she could ride to Ft. Irwin with your husband (40 miles) and then do before and after school daycare on base and then ride home with him each day. We considered that, but decided that it would be a bit too much for my daughter to deal with.

There is a Marine Base in Barstow and they always have openings in their child care center, so that would be my suggestion for preschool.

The best option, if you can't live on base is to do what we did...rent out in Silver Lakes, a community in the town of Helendale. It is a planned community around 2 lakes about 15/20 minutes from Barstow. It is half way to Victorville/Apple Valley, which puts you closer to lots of shopping, including a mall and a Target. (Walmart really is the only shopping in Barstow and it is a small one.)

Helendale Elementary in Silver Lakes is awesome. My daughter did kindergarten there and we loved it. My husband would make the 20 minute drive into Barstow each morning and then take the bus to the base. That way he was able to read the paper or surf the web on his phone, making the 20 mile drive more productive than if he were driving.

If you search Helendale Silver Lakes, you can read more about that community.

Hello I don't want to say the same things that everyone else has said, but it is now 2017. I am trying to see if there is any advice on a place to live close to Ft. Irwin. We can't live on post due to the fact that we own a pit bull. My kids love her so we aren't willling to get rid of her. I was just trying to get some information on locations to live.

Nothing has changed there. If anything, it is worse.

Your best option is living on post. Try to find someone to keep your dog during your tour.

If you're unwilling to do that, try to follow the suggestions in post #2.

Be aware that any place in CA, even there, that is willing to rent to owners of pit bulls, is a place where you probably don't want to live.

Do you have children? You dont want them to spend much, if any, time in Barstow. Also, the area referred to as College Heights is also known as Barstow Heights and is anything close to the community college.

Pit bulls are banned where I live. Not all of them are mean. They get a bad rap thanks to the punks who train them to kill. When I was in the army I drove to ft. Irwin & its quite a drive in the middle of no where. I hope you find what you're looking for.
