Back to OP's original question, which I don't believe had anything to do with eminent domain, etc.), I think they're looking for a lot for their price range. OP, are you posting this on a wide range of boards here, since 2-3 hours could take you to counties a long ways from the coast? You would be okay living in the desert or Central Valley (e.g., Bakersfield?). There are lots of sites with average housing costs, but you could also contact a relocation service or some realtors in a couple of different areas and just ask if your objectives are feasible. Keep in mind that 2-3 hours on a weekend is a lot different than 2-3 hours on a weekday. And, as noted, Ridgecrest is even further away. You're thinking of occasional weekend trips to the ocean? Some of the places mentioned, such as Ridgecrest and Joshua Tree, are definitely desert, with dry, often hot (though cold in the winter) weather. Are you willing to consider that type of area? And, as noted, employment is a rather significant factor you don't mention.

The issue of ED came up in the posts. That's why I mention it. I agree with the earlier poster who commented negatively on ED. It is the type of thing I'd sure want to know about, esp. after seeing it firsthand.
