Possibly moving to Orange County and working in Lake Elsinore. We are looking to live in the Ladera Ranch, San Clemente, Dana Point, or San Juan Capistrano areas of Orange county. Is the Ortega Highway a doable daily commute? I have read that there have been some improvements made recently. I would be coming home almost every night after dark....

It's a nasty winding mountain road, one lane in each direction.

I could not see doing it twice a day, no.

Is it a done deal you'll work in one place and live in another?

It's susceptible to grinding to a halt due to accidents, fires and mud/rockslides, in that order.

I love the Ortega Highway, and wouldn't mind a bit commuting from San Juan Capistrano to Elsinore. But it really does depend on how comfortable you are with winding mountain roads - AND - how willing you are to roll with the punches, and adapt if it's ever blocked, and you have to take the "long way home" in case of fires, or floods, or an accident.

If encountering a delay or closure would freak you out, or totally screw up your day, then don't do it. Because delays and closures will happen. Guaranteed!

If there's ever a time I recommend living in Lake Elsinore, this is it.

I'm not sure that time has been reached yet, honestly.

Lake Elsinore is great. It really is. Nice scenery, nice people...sorta one foot in the country and one in the city. Try Canyon Lake or Tuscany Hills.

Thank you for the replies. No, it is not a done deal. Just would like to live in that part of Orange County. How often does the Ortega Highway grind to a halt/close?

I commuted from Murrieta to RSM over Ortega for over 2 years. I would leave at 5AM or so and it wasn't too bad. Coming back was always slower.

You'd be going opposite of traffic so should be pretty easy drive. The road is twisty but you will learn it pretty quickly and come to enjoy the views. I'm a car guy though so may be a little biased.

It does get shut down periodically but not often. Maybe a couple/three times in winter because of weather and a few times for accidents. I've waited it out for accidents before or will drive around (91 or 76/78).

You can check North County Times for traffic and it will show if the road is closed.

Overall, I would do it. Even if traffic gets backed up it's better scenery than sitting on a freeway!

Why would you recommend that?
