Hi guys.

My 5-year old Chorkie has been having diahhrea for the past three days. If this continues, I'll have to take her to a vet, but....funds are tight right now. Does anyone know of an affordable (and good) vet in the Redlands/Mentone/Loma Linda area? I'm still fairly new to the area and have not had time to find a vet for her. The last one I had in Pedley/Riverside was good, but is now too far for me to drive to.

Any suggestions (for a vet or even home remedies) would be appreciated.

When my dog has the Hershey squirts, I give her canned pumpkin (the kind that's 100% pumpkin and nothing else) and plain white rice made with nothing but the water you boil it in.

But you're coming up on the 4th day of it, and dehydration is always a concern with the little breeds at this point.

I'd call a vet right away and explain your budget problems. Let them know what you CAN pay ("reasonable" is a vague term and could mean different things to different people). If they won't treat your dog at a reduced rate, or defer the bill, ask if they can suggest any low cost clinics or other vets that might be able to help. The local animal shelter or humane society may also have suggestions if they don't have their own low-cost clinics. Vets, shelters and humane societies certainly get calls from people with similar problems.

I'd try my best to find the cause before embarking on a treatment. Could be worms, or any or a number of other causes. As noted, you don't want to wait to treat a problem like this. You could make clear that you are looking for a vet to go to on a regular basis (i.e., you could be a long-term client), but would settle for a one-time "emergency" consultation if that's all they can offer at a rate you can afford (and then you keep looking for a long term solution, for future situations).

Take her to the Vet. I lost a cat because I waited too long. Pedialyte is great for rehydrating kids...why not dogs?
