I am interviewing for a job in Redlands. I currently live near downtown LA and want to move somewhere more family friendly where we can buy a house. Our budget is $300K to $400k (would of course like to stay near the 300 mark if possible).

We are looking to move into a newer home--but not brand new because we want a pool. In looking at homes on the internet I am seeing that most of the homes are older.

Any ideas on nearby areas with newer neighborhoods? We also want to be within 3-5 miles of grocery stores and/or target type retail. Would prefer a newer area. Also need good schools.

Am I asking too much? Any ideas? THANKS!!!

Redlands was known as the City of Millionaires, at the turn of the last century, so yeah, it does have a lot of beautiful historic homes. The library is magnificent - built in 1898. Everywhere you look in Redlands you see beautiful old architecture - it truly is one of my favorite cities!

If you want a new home, then you might be better off looking in one of the surrounding areas. Personally I like old houses, and don't care for new housing developments, so I have no idea which cities you should look at - but I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a list of developments that might work!

I recommend the Northeast part of town. There are some newer homes with nice sized lots and some great views. Use Google maps, satellite view of this area and you can see for yourself!

There are some newer neighboarhoods in the north and northeast part of Redlands. They are usually adjacent to older somewhat rougher neighborhoods but overall anywhere in the city is safe. At your price point you would actually get more house than in the older historic districts.

Redlands school district is terific and you can't go wrong living in any neighborhood services by Redlands.

You may also want to check out East Highlands. They are in the Redlands School district but not part of the city. Cookie cutter homes on maintained lots. Very OC like.

As far as being close to Target, no homes are actually near target and probably never will be. But Redlands is a small town so where ever you end up, you'll be no more than a 10 minute drive to Target/Grocery/Downtown shopping.

We ended up in Mentone by one of the high schools because we wanted a newer home but could not afford any of the ones we saw in Redlands. Still services by the Redlands school district and just outside of town and we got a house built in 2006 for cheap!

Good luck
