The hubs and i were going to take a nice vacation this year (without the kids), but now it looks like we will be moving to riverside this summer, so we will be too busy for a big vacation. But i was thinking we could still go for a long weekend somewhere out there. We lived in the oc for 4 years a while ago, so we are familiar with the beach, it wont be a brand new experience for us. Where would you suggest? North like santa barbara? South to san diego? Lake arrowhead or big bear? Any specific hotels/resorts? We are looking to relax and have fun.

Palm Springs?

There are a few casinos and some tourisy attractions in PS.

IMO, the area is small enough to tackle in a long weekend, too.

I've always liked trips to Big Bear / Lake Arrowhead and Anza-Borrego State Park.

Rent a cabin in the Julian area or go a few miles south and camp near lake Cuyamuca. Green River or Paso Picacho.

If you're in Riverside, and looking for a cabin in the mountains, Idyllwild is closer than Julian.

Idyllwild is higher in elevation, so it has more pines and cedars and a few oak trees. It's an art town, and one of the best places to hike and rock climb in Southern California.

Julian has more oak trees and other kinds of leafy trees, gets less snow, and is an old gold rush town - so everything downtown is either actually historic, or built to look that way.

They're both fun!

If you want a beach vacation, in my opinion Terranea Resort in RPV can't be beat. It's semi secluded and a really fun getaway trip for SoCal residents. I just went there last weekend and had blast (I'm from Riverside too!). Plus, you can easily go to Catalina from there with their private boat. Have fun!
