This is just the post I was looking for. My husband and I will be pcsing to Temecula may 2013, He is active duty Air Force and will be recruiting in Temecula. What are the better areas to live around Temecula. Any thoughts on Menifee. I am originally from Ramona, but that is to far of a drive and the housing seems reasonable in that area

IMO there are no bad areas in the Temecula/Murrieta area and there are many different levels of housing prices. I would suggest you look around and see which neighborhoods appeal to you. However, things go downhill when you go north/east.

Menifee is an area where there was some new construction a few years ago after the cheap land was built out in Temecula/Murrieta. San Jacinto College has a campus there. Otherwise, not much out there, you would still be doing most of your shopping, entertainment, etc, in Temecula/Murrieta but Menifee is only a few miles from Temecula/Murrieta. Housing prices might be a little lower than Temecula though.

@Rickyy, first, thanks for your service brother. I'm an active-duty Senior Chief. That's a great breakdown and I really appreciate it. To answer your question about the bridge, I was just curious more than anything. I'm going to be on an Amphib, so no North Island runs for me while in the yards or probably thereafter. I just traded in my Mustang (broke my heart) for a 2012 Ford Focus (39mpg/33 combined). Between that and possibly van/carpooling I feel comfortable with the tradeoff for the family. I have two school-age children and my wife loves getting involved in PTO and those things. Thanks again for your service and the great information on Temecula/Murrieta!

Hey Senior Chief, it sounds like you have looked at the situation and decided it was worth it. There are a lot of advantages to living up here. School are good, very little crime. Very family oriented. The climate here is much different from San Diego which I prefer. I think you and your family will like living here. Since you are going to be on a gator at 32nd St, you won't have to worry about N.I. which is a very good thing.

Too bad about your mustang, I have an 09 GT and I really like it. After I retired from the Navy I worked for the Office of Personnel Management as a special agent doing background investigations for security clearances. I just retired from that job on 31Aug and I am DONE. In Sep11 I was instructed to turn in my GOV Impala and was issued a brand new ford Focus, I drove it the last year I worked. For reasons unknown to me, the focus was not a popular car with the other agents, but I have to say I was surprised and I grew to really like that car. I was also surprised at how good the suspension was, its pretty fun in the twisties. It got exactly 39mpg on the highway and I found it to be a very comfortable car. I put a pretty hard 30k miles on it with no problems at all. I think it would make an excellent commuter and I kinda hated to turn it in.

I would recommend you take some time to look at the various neighborhoods because there is quite a bit of difference in them. I know there is now a tendency for people to buy in the French Valley and Winchester areas but I would try to avoid those areas because they are really hard to get to after getting off the I-15. I live in the Crown Hill area and my exit was Hwy. 79 South which was the first exit past the border check station and I was always so glad because the big traffic jam at Winchester Rd. always started right at my exit and I was able to slide right around it.

So good luck with everything and welcome to the area. Rick

Temecula is nice but the commute sux. I would commute from Temecula to Coronado each day. Some of the examples are accurate. About an hour plus in the early morning, almost 2 hrs between 7-9 am. Evenings can be bad with 2 hrs being normal, fridays are the worst. I was able to work nights and it cut my commute in half. Now if i could live in Temecula or Fallbrook/Rainbow with a job on Camp Pendleton, life would be very good.

That is perfect! Pendleton is about 20 minutes away and its a great Tricare network. Nearest AFB would be Edwards and its not worth the drive considering everything you need is on Pendleton or down at the Navy base. Temecula is one of the best cities in So Cal.
