Hello all,

on the way back to the coast on Saturday from checking out Joshua Tree and 29 Palms, thought we could detour through the mountains and get an idea for future trips.

Any recommendations please of route or stops from the 10 exiting Joshua Tree NP?

Thinking about taking the 74 from Indio but then 243?
Less driving more stopping desirable but only allowing 4 or 5 hrs detour.

Kids are 11 and 13 and love scrambling up dangerous cliffs and playing with snakes.

cheers!

Orange County.

We thought about detouring into San Diego Co but that would undoubtably mean another overnight.

79 and 74 would be another route not exactly mountainous. Probably not as scenic as I remember from childhood.
