Sorry, I didn't mean to restrict my statement to "native Californians" but rather to include "former Californians" as well.

Yes, though I like DFW better than Houston, after nearly 4 years here, I haven't really been able to make the adjustment where it feels like "home". Its been good, economically, however I can't say that I've been able to embrace the Texan lifestyle, though I do respect it.

About a month ago, I was out for my power walk early on a Sunday morning when a big-haired elderly woman pulled her Buick Park Avenue over to the curb, rolled down her passenger window, and called me over. I thought maybe she needed directions, but she proceeded to berate me for not being in "the Lord's house" on "the Lord's day" and that unless I changed my ways, I and my "fellow heathens would spend eternity in Hell." (I'm beginning to think I'm already there!)

Nothing remotely like that ever happened to me when I lived in Palm Springs.

Interestingly, I've had a few similar experiences not only in DFW, but Houston, and Amarillo also.

I forgot her intro line - when I walked over to the car, she said "Do you know if you're going to heaven"? I said "Ma'am, it's 6:30 in the morning - I don't even know my own name right now!"

When I got tired of her and walked away from the car, she actually followed me for nearly a block, calling out things like "You should be working your Love for the lord instead of working your legs!"

I posted an advertising picture of what I thought her car was (I am guessing a 1989-ish Buick Park Avenue, pristine condition, probably garaged its whole life and taken out only on Sunday mornings to proselytize) and warned all my Facebook friends to keep an eye out for the Lordmobile.

I've never set foot in Amarillo - when I drove through town on 287 I swore I heard Dueling Banjos on the only AM station, so I kept the windows tightly rolled up.

WOW! I don't know what Missouri you live in that you find ugly but a large chunk of it is in the Ozarks which are breathtakingly beautiful. In our five years on the shore of Table Rock Lake there has only been one summer, our first, that was truly hot and during which humidity was really an issue. I know for a fact that with the drought and all, central and northern California are screamingly hot compared to where we live. I check on CA because between us we have five children and nine grandchildren living there. As for racist terms, we've only heard one once and that, too, was in our first years and we've traveled extensively through the southern half of MO.

It sounds to me that you, just like many and not just those who have migrated to this state are stuck in the rut that wherever you go you take yourself with you.

By the way, my wife and I are both native Californians, me from the south and her from the north. We're well into our 60s and spent the bulk of our lives in CA and both of us have lived in other states as well. Strangely enough, I liked almost every one of the other eight states in which I've lived; the sole exception being Texas. But then again, I didn't spend my time comparing them to San Diego where I was born, Newport Beach where I was raised and Sacramento where I spent my last 20 years before retiring.

PS. We've yet to be bible thumped and our electric bill averages $130 a month on a level payment basis.

I think the place I got the people who attacked me on religion was florida. But that was a teeny tiny town. But it does happen. California has its racists I lived in a town where the nazi skin heads were pretty big and I.hear things here like I have in other states. I think the difference is that more people are against the talk. Or maybe its just that people don't want to be seen as racist in california because of tghe backlash.

No, but people do yell at you sitting at red lights for smoking in your car with the windows up.
True story.
Proselytizing busy bodies.

There are some parts of Missouri where we live that have some pretty scenery. I'm not saying all of Missouri is like that because I haven't been everywhere here. I am just speaking from our experience in the area that we live in. The humidity to someone not use to it and more of a dry desert heat can be a little intense. As far as the racism goes like I said before I hear it on a daily basis both from other employees and customers as well. I just ignore it the best that I can because I don't feel the same way. I've had quite a few older people ask me about what church I go to or my religious outlook and when I tell them that I don't go to church they in a nice way tell me that I'm going to hell. Like I said before these are my opinions and I'm not trying to personally attack anyone who lives here or plans on living here it's just not somewhere we want to live or raise our family.
