Looking to buy a home and move from renting in corona. i've decided between 2 locations due to what i can afford and qualified for. i've come up with Lake arrowhead for a nice location decent homes, or Phelan for size, and age of home. where should i go i have a wife and 2 kids.

Lake Arrowhead is a nice choice, forest town and good schools. The only thing is the employment opportunities are very limited to gift shops, resorts and restaurants. If you work down the hill, the drive will wear out your car on a daily basis over time. Phelan is a good choice, too. Beautiful desert and you might get a home on the outside of town on a big lot with a nice view. The employment opportunities will be greater in Phelan, California for sure.

Thank you for the reply... I keep looking at both places and can't make a decision. I will be working down the hill. Probably colton area, and both of our family is in Rancho cucamonga and Ontario. I'm thinking more home would be nice with all the open space, but having a home where family/friends could visit and feel like a get away is nice too. I think we will be getting a realtor and visiting both places soon. Also is there very much crime in phelan? I've heard about the neighboring towns and to stay away from them. Any thoughts?

Arrowhead or Phelan?

Mountain top forest or high desert?

Phelan sounds more reasonable in your situation OP.

Phelan is a dump with meth addicts. Arrowhead (post-real estate crash of '05) is both affordable and beautiful. This is a NO BRAINER.

Also consider that Phelan has horrific winds. I can't possibly imagine anyone that isn't blind to even ask this question.

I live in Wrightwood, which is 10 miles from Phelan into the mountains. We do our major grocery shopping in Phelan. If you like the desert then Phelan is fine off the main strip of Phelan Rd. There are lovely homes back there. Do be aware though that Phelan is mostly dirt roads.

If you're considering Phelan, also look at Pinion Hills just to the west -- still high desert but more hills. And Wrightwood which is at 6500'. You'll get more land in Phelan or Pinion Hills but Wrightwood is mountain forest, and I believe a lot closer to the 15 than Arrowhead is. (12 minutes from WW to the 15 freeway.) BTW Snowline School District encompasses all 3 (we call it the Tri-Communities) and has excellent schools.

I think Wrightwood would be a better place for you- the drive down the hill wouldn't be that bad compared to being in Lake Arrowhead.
