If this is not sarcasm, it reveals the sad truth about some misguided thinking.

That same misguided thinking led to things like the Mountain Lion hunting ban and various restrictions both in terms of seasons and locations for other forms of game.

As a result - severe overpopulation of game.

I wish we could have some seasons where I live. Our place is completely overrun by deer, mountain lions, and coming our way are feral hogs and black bear (as their ranges expand).

I'm the OP, and I'll try to answer honestly.

I enjoy the comradery of being in the field with my buddies. I enjoy being outside with nature. I enjoy the challenge (and trust me, more ducks get away than get eaten). I enjoy the taste of wild game.

lndshk, if you've never shot a shotgun, I'd be happy to meet you at Raahauge's in Corona and let you try one of mine. There we only shoot clay (orange) birds.

OP. how is the effort to reward equation for duck hunting...looking purely at the meat and skins you take? Looks like a good day!

I took a friend deer hunting on Catalina w a connection i have out there...who was kind enough to guide two noobs. The most expensive part aside from permits was getting to the island. We did two trips and tagged out. I had deer sphagetti for months! If i knew a place mainlandside where deer could be found without great difficulty i think itd be worth the effort again...but i hear the tag return ratesvare like 10% in a lot of the regions. I got lucky with some naive deer handing me a 140 yard broadside shot...so don't think my chances would be very good.

BAHB: im not quite sure of the mtn lion situation but predator hunting to control small game is counterintuitive...they are likely exerting top down control on prey populations. We have entered an age where fewer people hunt...quite different from when many furbearers were nearly extirpated. Im sure Dfw is estimating take and will change regulations accordingly. I think controlling predators to bolster prey populations for hunters is a bit misguided. I agree that any heartstring bs needs to be left out of wildlife management

You'd have to define reward. It's a lot of time and work for very few ducks. On the flip side, a day spent out in the field with my buddies, playing with my toys, that's a lot of reward.

It's like fishing. Fishing is fun, but you don't do it for the meat.

Haha on fishing, that depends! If you don't mind eating fish that most people pass over, you can do pretty well.

Fishing is fun, catching fish is more fun

Fishing also depends on where you are fishing. Fishing in Ca coast, not so much catching going on. Fishing in Alaska, lots of catching and lots more fun.

I've had plenty of slow days in Alaska too.
