Thinking about retiring to the desert. During a recent trip I did not see any homes with solar panels. Yet, on these forums the high cost of energy for air conditioning is always brought up. Why hasn't solar energy caught on in the desert?

There a lot of homes with solar panels. Some HOA's prohibit them though.

I cant see how an HOA can prohibit Solar panels. I know how HOAs work and the rules but that seems so idiotic to have it as one of the rules of the HOA. Get with the times.

Yes, Rancho Mirage has spotty code inforcement which is why I only owned there for three years. In Indian Wells we have more rigerious code restrictions. Solar panels are allowed but require building permits.

Please define "rigerious". I couldn't find it in a dictionary.

I see a lot of solar panels in Palm Springs. But keep in mind many houses are part time or vacation rentals - solar panels might not make as much sense in those cases. Personally I will add solar panels once I can afford to purchase a system. Don't want to lease.
