We are looking to drive on a Friday in a couple weeks from Redlands up the 215 to 395 to 58 to 99....to eventually get to Mariposa .Is this route better than the 5, which I hear may be under construction? Does it matter? I haven't been driving in CA for 20 years now.... what kind of construction is going on on the 5? Am I doomed to a looong slow drive no matter how we go?

On a Friday?...you're doomed. Suggestions:

Leave early;
The 15 is going to have some Las Vegas traffic if you leave late;
The 395 has few passing lanes and Caltrans removed the dashed center line from many segments so passing is limited; and
The 58 between Kramers Junction and the Los Angeles County line is a 2-lane road (one per direction). After that point it is a divided highway (with intermittent at-grade intersections).

As of a month ago, there was no construction on I-5 that would affect a drive to Yosemite... I don't know about now.

Check traffic conditions Caltrans Road Information

I-5 may be faster even if its a longer route. It tends to go through fewer downtown's and you'll fight with less commuter traffic once you leave the greater LA area.
