Hi @phddoc,

It is literally illegal for your realtor to "steer" you away from certain neighborhoods and city areas. This is a form of discrimination banned by real estate boards and can affect the license status of your agent. So I think your real estate agent is being very professional in that respect. However this does not prevent you from doing your own research, there are many websites that show the crime rates in different areas an a quick google search will let you know that data.

I have some recommendation of popular communities - if you are still interested
