Cali native considering moving to PS/PD area from Scottsdale. I've been in Scottsdale for about 20 years so I'm not current on the PS/PD area anymore. I always loved it when I lived in LA.

I'm a young-minded, active mid-50s female. Online professor and holistic wellness practitioner with a home budget of up to $600k.

Curious about best areas, crime, and friendliness of the locals. I've read some online forums discussing how the area has declined and that it's not the same Palm Springs it once was. My realtor won't say anything about crime, but she did steer me toward Palm Desert and said she thinks I'd prefer it over PS.

This is always a great site for good intel, so thought I'd ask here before making the trip out there to look at properties. Thanks in advance.

I-10 East bound has a HUGE void right now, so if you come, you can never leave! (Channeling Eagles, here.)

You might wait a 12-18 months, for the housing to crash, then swoop in and get your desert oasis, for 60 cents on the dollar...

Default Scottsdale to Palm Springs

Where do you recommend?

Palm Springs / Palm Desert appear to have a nice vibe and a lot of things to do. I'm wanting to teach at a nearby university and also open a wellness/career coaching practice. Definitely need to be in an area conducive for this. I'm open to all ideas/recommendations.

Really want to get some observations from folks currently living in PS/PD about quality of life, safety, social life, etc. I love to network and be involved in my community (e.g. chamber of commerce, professional organizations, etc.).

PS/PD/Cath City are geriatric, for the most part. You'll have to focus on gerontology type material. Can't really think of a "university" that's close by. (At least one, in the traditional sense.)

Maybe San J Comm College? Or

College of the Desert.

Opening a "Wellness" might be a hit, with the older population. This, I could see, being successful.

"Career Coaching?" The vast majority of the population is retired.

Their interests are~

2 feet hitting the floor in the morning,

Waiting for the paper to hit the porch,

Making their tee time with the other 3 golfers.

On the evening activities, they strive to stay awake to make final jeopardy!

You'll see what I mean, when you get there!

Thank you for the info. So not much in the way of nightlife or things to do for younger, active people? I'm heavily into ballroom dance, too, and need to have a decent studio within a 30-minute drive. Maybe asking too much! :-)

The winter weather is fabulous in the Desert, you can eat outside on El Paseo, in the summer you have a cabin somewhere, the best of both worlds.

Don’t forget to mention the rampant crime and homeless in Riverside. It’s questionable whether it’s safe to walk down the street. I had to walk several blocks near Downtown Riverside and had 2 different people shouting at me from the underpass, and one tried to convince me to go to the nearby park for who knows what, likely for drugs. Our entire neighborhood’s mail was getting stolen in our gated community almost 2 years straight with no help from police or the post office.

My brother lives in Palm Springs and I visit often. I find PS somewhat quirky, but lots of good restaurants. Weather is great except late June to mid September. It has wealthy areas but they don’t dominate. Lots of mostly affordable housing if you know where to look.

Are there any cool attractions and/or sites to see that you recommend? I'll be there in March.

Downtown Riverside has precisely nothing whatsoever to do with locations 50+ miles to the east.
