I am considering moving back to Riverside; "born and raised there", I'm 51 yrs. old and have been out of state for about 15 years. I will probably be on a fixed income and will not have a lot of money for rent. $500.00-700.00 would be about all I could afford. From what I've gathered, to live in a decent/safe place in Riverside would be around $900.00 or so ?
I've read about Apple Valley areas, Big Bear, Yuciapa and etc., and have seen some rentals for around these prices? I have a few friends in Riverside and would like to keep in touch once and a while.
I'm open for ideas?

Maybe Hemet or San Jacinto? Those towns have good and bad areas so know where you are going.

Also, Beaumont or Banning might be in that range but I'm not sure about that.

Honestly, do yourself a favor and if you are single, rent a studio apt. IN Riverside. Look at the "Wood streets" or near Fairmont park. you will be much happier living near the city center, close to shopping and services.

Not sure that $500-700 is doable even for a studio in Riverside. If there are, they might not be too livable. I agree with the above poster about living right there, but maybe consider getting a roommate so you can split rent in an affordable 2 bedroom.

Big Bear is lovely but the drive to Riverside is lots longer than 30 min., even on good days.

I'll be moving out of state from Riverside in a month. Part of the reason for moving now as opposed to later is the way rents have been going up. There is no rent control and with all the forclosures the rental market is exploding.

The rent for a on bedroom apt in my place, newly purchased, is almost 900. This used to be the cheapest place in a good area. It was a 55plus place, no idea if they plan on doing that in the future.

For 700 you won't find a studio and for 500 you'd be hard pressed to find a room to rent.

My advise would be to look for an agreeable room mate and find a nice two bedroom. You'll get much more bang for your buck that way.

The area around Riverside Plaza is a really nice area where stores are close and your near the freeway.

The Sun City area is good if you are over 55. But I've heard that there have been exception made under certain situations. My parents live there. It is very affordable. Riverside is just up the 215 about 30 min. Way below market values. I get mad because I can't live there yet. I'd only live there for the prices though. Too many old people. It's very clean and safe. Many programs for seniors to stay busy.

Big Bear, yucaipa, Apple Valley are all closer to San Bernardino than Riverside! I recomend Perris, Hemet, Temecula.

defragger...if you want to live in Riverside, I doubt you'd like Perris. Temecula would be more than you'd want to pay. There are some older, clean apartments around UCR that are affordable, so you might have one of your Riveside friends check that out for you.

And to that whipper-snapper Tim-Mac...what do you mean...OLD PEOPLE??!! But he's right...it's clean and pretty safe in Sun City!!
