Oh.....no.....Ortega is a freakin nightmare....friends of mine who commute to OC over Ortega HATE IT with a passion....and going down to 76 or 78 and across is a LONG drive. If he's working in SC, I'd think about homes in Vista or San Marcos....something right OFF the 78 freeway, ya know?

My daughter commuted on Ortega Highway until recently, and she didn't mind it. But again, Ortega Highway is going to be a huge problem for the next three years, and closed completely at night. It's by far the most direct route to San Clemente, but they're working on a three-mile stretch that will only be one lane, so it will probably have hour-long delays.

Default Ortega

Ortega is really hit or miss now. Sometimes you get through the construction in 5 min sometimes an hour. The time frames don't really seem to matter either, its very random. If you are in Elsinore commuting anywhere in south orange county its still the best route imo due to the horribly conjested 91/15 interchange and the really long route to the 76/78. Railroad Canyon is much better now other than the random construction projects that seem to have no purpose they keep doing. Today 3/31/07 the road is closed for construction and its the only route that doesn't an hour to get out of the area. There was 0 notice on this closure. My wife was an hour late to work because of this. So if you don't mind being trapped and don't have to go anywhere on Saturdays its a wonderful area.

I have to laugh because many (not all) people living in the Temecula/Murrieta area like to refer to it as the "new" Orange County. It is congested, the schools are crowded (I know many that opt for private ed.), and not worth it. Right now the entire Riverside/San Bernardino counties are overwhelmed with gangs and drugs. The funniest thing is that I here parents claim they are moving their children away from the bad element, but their children ARE the bad element they are running from.

Fedup, I agree with your last sentence. Way too often parents want to blame everyone else when their own kids are the problem. To say that "the entire Riverside/San Bernardino counties are overwhelmed with gangs and drugs" is a little extreme, though. It is a problem, absolutely, but there are still a much larger number of really great, responsible people, including teenagers.

I have noticed a few threads about Lake Elsinore and I can't imagine why of all the areas to choose from in California why folks would consider moving there. I made the mistake of allowing my daughter to go to one of the charter schools for gifted kids at a campus in Lake Elsinore and this will be her first and last year there. I now suspect that this program was put in this particular school because they needed a serious boost in the test scores.
Wildomar would be a better choice.

I can't believe this!!! I think this is the first time I've EVER agreed with dusesean1986! I moved from Mo Val 10 years ago...had lived there for over 30 years...things changed radically...glad I moved away.

Hi - I live in Lake Elsinore on the North side of the lake off of Lake Street. I bought my house in 1995 and have been there ever since. There are things I love about it and things I dislike. I used to love the small town feel but that is going away now with all the growth we have had. I think this city has been given a bad rap for many years. I have a beautiful house with mountain views from my front porch and a lake view from my backyard. I have yet been able to find this anywhere else in Southern California and I have looked everywhere. If anyone needs to know detailed information about this city, please email me and I will be happy to provide you with unbiased answers. It all depends upon what you can afford. I can now afford to move somewhere else but it is so hard to leave. The schools in Murrieta, Temecula and even parts of Corona do score better than Lake Elsinore but that is because they do not have anywhere near the same amout of english as a second language population as does Lake Elsinore (this aspect does concern me). If I had to buy again now and the prices were the same, would I buy again in Lake Elsinore, probably not. It all depends on what you are loooking for. I will say that I have never felt unsafe here on the north side and have thought in the past that the schools were very good.

Default test scores

The thing about test scores is, they don't reflect the quality of the teachers or the curriculum, just the average performance of the students. So if a child is getting good support from home and doesn't have learning problems, he or she can score high, even if the rest of his or her class is lower because of the language problem.

My kids all went to Elsinore Elementary, Elsinore Middle, and Elsinore High School. They always scored in the 85th to 97th percentile on all the state tests, and those who took the ACT and SAT in high school scored in the 90th or higher. So their education was just fine.
