I was born in Hemet and raised in Idyllwild in 1951. I managed to move away 4 times...(actually moving out of the state 3 of those 4 times) ...but, as the legendary Ramona Curse states...I always ended up returning when things got tough. The last time I returned I ended up on disability and now I don't make enough to move again.
I can remember when the worst crime committed in Hemet and San Jacinto was when some kids stole all 4 of your hub caps instead of just 1. Now there are registered sex offenders in just about every mobile home park and apartment complex in the valley. I can remember when Hemet was considered a retirement town and the majority of the population was Senior Citizens.
Now there are, considerably, less Senior Citizens and the majority of the population consists of families and working aged people. Unfortunately...that percentage also includes a large number of Parolees (in 1995 a study was done and published in the Hemet News that stated that...at that time, 85% of the less than Senior Citizen aged group were on parole or probation for, at least, one felony. I always wondered where all of those Parolees came from and why they gathered here.) . Now the crimes committed in Hemet and San Jacinto are as serious and numerous as in large cities like Los Angeles and New York. We have gangs and drive by shootings just as regularly as the big cities and residential burglaries are an everyday event. In the last two years I have been in Walgreens when a shootout between a policeman and a criminal occurred and in a Check Into Cash when two armed men came in and robbed it at gun point...making the customers lie down on the floor. The mobile home park I live in is on the main drag but close enough to one of the high crime areas and it is nothing to hear at least two or three gun shots coming from the area behind us.
Yes....we do have hookers. But unlike the larger cities....ours work for cheap (usually for a dope fix) and (forgive my bluntness) are down right raunchy looking....(which is why they are so cheap).
Because of the economy...Hemet and San Jacinto has a large population of homeless people. But, unlike the larger cities...our law enforcement officials do not show those who have been forced to live on the street, in their car or in the only shelter in the valley any respect and understanding and they roust them every chance they get...arresting most for vagrancy (Los Angeles doesn't go that far...allowing the homeless to sleep on the streets and in tents as long as they obey the laws).
Now Hemet has become a mecca for illegal drugs and the type of people who use those drugs is that of low class, unscrupulous (and lazy) criminals who will steel anything (working or not) to sell to their drug dealer for dope. Now in Hemet and San Jacinto, honesty is, not only a forgotten concept and meaning but the word itself has become practically non-existent They have absolutely no respect for others' rights, property and feelings (including family and so called close friends) and, definitely, not for themselves.
Hemet/San Jacinto also has the stupidest criminals. It's like they all seem to have gravitated to our valley, for some reason. (You know the type that robs a convenience store and looks directly into the surveillance camera, smiles and waves....or like the two men who robbed the bank on Stanford and Florida and then stopped at the Del Taco in the same shopping center for lunch after wards and then wonder why they got caught.... ).
To make things worse...the population seems to grow every year. When I left California the last time, the population of Hemet was only 15,000 (which didn't include the Snow Birds) and there was one high school in Hemet and one in San Jacinto. When I came back in 1992 the population had risen to 60,000 (also not including the Snow Birds because there weren't as many anymore as they are going to Arizona and Florida instead) . I haven't looked lately, but I'm sure it has risen since then just by the amount of traffic on Florida Avenue.
Even the climate had changed in the six years I was gone. Hemet and San Jacinto used to have a dry climate (which is why doctors recommended it to their elderly patients with respiratory problems). ...and that was back when there were a lot of citrus orchards in the valley (and all of their irrigation) . But ever since returning in '92, the summers have reminded me of the summers in Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Georgia because they have been so humid. And it seems as though the valley has decided not to have a winter ever again because the winter season has been getting shorter and shorter (if existent at all) . When I left...San Jacinto and Hemet's city limits did not touch each other and the small, unincorporated area between them was referred to as Hemacinto. In '92, when I came back...the unincorporated area no longer existed (much like that of Edgemont, Sunnymead and Rancho California...lol), Valle Vista has its own zip code and now there are 5 high schools in Hemet alone.
In reading the back posts for this thread I noticed a few who sang Hemet's praises...so I will say that there are a few “good” things about this valley....(outdoor recreation, beautiful mountains, the Ramona Pageant, closeness to the desert, mountains, cities and beaches and it has some great historical stuff).
I'm not going to say, “don't move here,” because some people seem to like this kind of town, people, economy and life style. I'm just not one of them. If I had the money it would take to move somewhere else (I would love to live somewhere In the Pacific Northwest) ...believe me...I would be gone in a heart beat...(and this time leave through Temecula so I can break the “curse” and stay gone this time) .

San Jacinto/Hemet ... Minor Zoo at Park Hill ... a great local community college ... fishing and hiking at Diamond Valley Lake ... Western Center for Paleontology ... Estudillo Mansion ... Simpson Park ... an easy drive for a day in Idyllwild ... Ramona Bowl Pageant... free bird watching tours ... 2 farmer's markets ... Soboba Casino ... 30 minutes to wineries ... a place is what
you make of it.

@ Gandalara Sorry but every town has an underlying foundation of being what it is. True you can choose to ignore what is around you and try and look for the best in a positive frame of mind. But Hemet is the PITTS.
Including the fact that you can find a Pitt Bull in just about every neighborhood.
tpospidil, da jammer, and ^22639^ had it right
This will be my very last Summer in Hell's hot kitchen that is Hemet. Goodbye 112 degree summers

BTW I am also a vendor for the last 3 years at the Farmer's Market next to the Library. Unfortunately, its a sorry excuse for a Farmer's Market. Its more Swap Meet style with only 2 produce vendors. It could be so so much more but there is NO advertising whatsoever because the market managers are just too greedy to come out of pocket for anything.
The Minor's Zoo is not a true Zoo it is private property with a few goats, a Buffalo, some sheep and Gazelle type looking animals that can be seen from the road side.
Not trying to be a Negative Nancy just stating facts.

Gandalara in the So Cal Desert sounds a lot like Jeff Stone selling his snake oil. Stone who was District 3 supe who covered Hemet/San Jacinto and he and the (dismissed) Riverside County Planning Commissioner John Petty turned it into a Social Services dump. Stoner is now in the Senate and his District is the Coachella Valley, you know THE DESERT. Stone has all of his homeless in Temecula (where he has a home) and his parolees shipped to the San Jacinto Valley by giving them travel vouchers that is just enough to get them into Hemet. Just today, February 21, 2016 Hemet's police chief, (nicknamed Barney Fife) has declared that his department can't handle the level of crime in the city. An article was written two years ago where it disclosed that out of the first 10,000+ early parolees released, Hemet received nearly 3000 of them. Hemet is a beautiful little cul-de-sac with no jobs, very few places to shop, and most of the better restaurants are closing and leaving. Hemet has some great people fighting to keep it's charm, but when criminals and tweakers get trapped in the cul-de-sac, they simply prey on the hardworking citizens and seniors to feed their drug habits. CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED.

What 1Tellindatruth says is all the true. I have the only house on the block that has not been burglarized or home invaded and that's only because I keep big Rhodesian Ridgebacks that I take out front anytime scum bags walk by. I make sure people see what I have guarding my house. They are having a town meeting tomorrow night to talk about a 1% sales tax increase to hire more cops and firemen due to the mounting problem of crime caused by the mass of prostitutes, drug addicts, probationers, pedophiles, and gang bangers. This town is now a sanctuary city full of the homeless hanging out in parking lots and begging for spare change. I can not get out of this town fast enough.
