Only the agency in the jurisdiction where you applied can provide current information...

It might be worth a visit in person

Not all jurisdictions have the same wait time and the wait also varies by housing need...

It really depends on the circumstances...

It can take 5 or more years as is the case when the list is closed.

It can take only a few weeks as in the case of Natural Disasters like Hurricane Katrina.

I helped an elderly lady keep her studio apartment by letting her know about housing and taking to the eligibility section... due to her advanced age and that she was living on less than $90 a month after paying her rent and utilities... she was able to get her certificate in about 6 weeks.

Her rent went from $425 to $87 per month and she was able to stay in the apartment that she called home for many years.

I am assisting an elderly world war 2 disabled vet with his section 8 application. I began the process in the beginning of 2007. From what I was told disabled vets have top priority. I finally wrote them about 2 weeks ago and received a very stern letter back to the effect that his place on the list is active. They continue on to say that the Housing Authority is not funded for emergency assistance and cannot estimate the length of time it will take and will no longer respond to any written inquiries regarding the status of an application. Maybe this will be a hint that the process is slow. Best of Luck!

You can hedge your bet if willing to relocate.

I know several Bay Area families that applied to multiple Section 8 waiting lists and all of them took the first one that accepted them.

Two eventually moved back to the Bay Area and kept their Housing Assistance because Vouchers are portable.

Just something to think about.

Is elegibility for secton 8 based on income only, or do you have to be on some sort of public assistance?
