There are lots of things to do in the desert for the hippie types. I think you would like the La Quinta Cove. It's older, therefore less expensive. It does have some crime because, well, lots of different people from all walks of life live there. But, there is a beautiful hiking oasis at the top of the cove, a five mile walking-bike loop all the way around it, and you can walk to the post office, coffee shop, community theater, etc.

There is also Pinyon Pines which is about 20 minutes up Highway 74 on some serious switch back roads. If you really, really want to live out in the sticks that is the way to go. But, if you live there, plan on adding about $600 a month to your fuel budget.

Good luck to you and welcome to California!

P.S. Palm Desert has a lot of yoga and pilates studios, health food stores and art galleries.

Its all good...I find PS very hip and I think you would enjoy it. Also not far from DHS. I like ranch mirage, palm desert and la quinta but I am 50 not young and hip - I think you will love it here the strip in PS is colorful and will be a wonderful new experience.
I have lived Hawaii, central ca, panama city florida, park city utah...it is good you want to get out of the south and see the world... you have the rest of your life to park it and rot in the same town...

No, the Cove is a mixed bag. Some parts have a lot of crime and other parts (closer to the mountain) are pretty nice.
