Is anyone currently commuting via motorcycle from the Murrieta/Temecula area down to San Diego? Does the lane splitting through the backups on the 15 save you much time when compared to driving it via cage - I'm hearing it's about 1 to 1.5 hours via car, depending on time of day?

Where in San Diego specifically?

I used to ride here and I don't think it saves you as much time as it would in say LA.

The Rancho Bernardo / Poway region...? I've heard of a couple of riders getting whacked by car doors at the 78 backup, while lane splitting through there. I used to drive it about 10 years ago, and it was about 45 minutes. I hear now it is closer to 1.5 hours though - I'd like to keep it less than an hour during normal commuting hours (like 0530 and 1500), and figured my bike might be the way to go!

I highly doubt its any more than an hour by car much less motorcycle.

People suck when it comes to observing motorcyclists, but having a bunch of Camp Pendleton squid riding around doesn't help either. Whatever you do, keep both wheels on the ground!
