Hello, I moved to San Diego last year, but was in school for a while. Now, I am out of school and looking for a job. Is it hard to find a job out here? I have put in applications at temp agencies and waiting for call backs. Am looking in places like monster.com, jobs.com, craigslist, etc.

What is the job market like out here? I am in need of a job soon.

It's either really easy or impossible. Depends on what you do. What do you do?

I was a tech writer for an engineering firm for about 7 years when I lived in Wisconsin. Right now, I'm just looking for any type of clerical jobs for the time being, but tech writing IS something I do want to get back into.

Any suggestions??? I lived in the downtown area, close to Balboa Park.

There are a lot of tech writer jobs out there. Try a company like Tristaff or Eastridge... avoid Manpower.

Problem is, I haven't worked in about a year and that may hurt me. Last year I was in school.

Are clerical jobs hard to find out here?

It depends on your level of experience. There is tremendous competition for entry-level work. The job market is very good right now for more senior people but very tight for junior people.

Right now I am willing to find anything, doesn't have to have benefits either. I'm married and my husband lives and works in Irvine. He makes decent money and I have good medical insurance coverage through him.

I've done clerical work before, but many years ago. I didn't work at all last year but before that, I was a tech writer for about 7 years. I quit a great job at a great company to relocate out to CA, because my husband got a plum job out here working for the electric company up in LA area. But I moved down here to go to school for teaching.

You could apply for everything you may be qualified for with the County. It'll take some time to go through the testing and background checks, but there are many departments that may have vacancies coming up for clerical jobs and other work. You can also apply for positions at nearby cities, although I wouldn't recommend San Diego. Try checking for openings at college and school districts too.

I'm sorry to say that the Tech Market here is pretty dismal here, and the people I know who haven't been laid off yet aren't happy either at their companies. Don't even bother if you're an older worker, and by older I mean anyone who's not over their 30's, and they expect you to have recent experience like nothing more than a few months of downtime. Most of those jobs are in Sorrento Valley and the commute takes way too long for the distance covered.

The job market is very open out here but it really depends on what you are looking for. The creative market is a bit tough without experience but medicine, tech, retail and those types of places are great. My friends get jobs at the casinos until they find their "ideal" job. Casinos have great pay but you have to deal with the smoke. Good luck!

San Diego is not good for art/design/media jobs and if you're black then forget it unless you want to work in Target, Walmart, Best Buy or a Fast Food joint as those are the main places that are willing to accept.
